William and Julia Moulden Dean

Adele Lindenmeyr, PhD, is the inaugural William and Julia Moulden Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Dean Lindenmeyr began her tenure at 麻豆入口 in 1987, when she joined the faculty of the History Department. After serving as the chair of the department, and then as the Dean of Graduate Arts and Sciences, she was appointed Dean of the College in 2014.

The College has flourished under Dean Lindenmeyr鈥檚 leadership. She has overseen the launch of numerous new academic programs, including a new doctoral program in Theology, a master鈥檚 program in Environmental Science, and the addition of several undergraduate majors and minors. She has also supported the launch of six new Centers of Excellence鈥攖he Center for Irish Studies, the Albert Lepage Center for History in the Public Interest, the Center for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Stewardship, the Center for Political Theology, the Center for Inclusive Education and the 麻豆入口 One Sky Center for Astrophysics鈥攂ringing the total number of College Centers to 12. Dean Lindenmeyr鈥檚 achievements for the College include key fundraising successes such as securing the two largest gifts in the College鈥檚 history. By the midpoint of Espiritus Nova: The Campaign for 麻豆入口, with Dean Lindenmeyr at the helm, the College has raised nearly 84% of its goal鈥攊ncluding $7M+ for research and $25.6M for student and academic programs.

Dean Lindenmeyr has prioritized support for faculty research and scholarship as well as investing in student success. Launching several new initiatives to support faculty hiring and retention, including College funding opportunities, she has overseen faculty recruitment efforts responsible for bringing some of the world鈥檚 best researchers and educators to 麻豆入口. The number of endowed chairs and professorships has increased by five during the Espiritus Nova Campaign. Dean Lindenmeyr鈥檚 leadership has demonstrated equal commitment to supporting student success鈥攚ith a specific focus on creating an equitable environment where all students have access to the full range of educational experiences offered at 麻豆入口. The Center for Inclusive Education, which she launched in 2024, provides stipends and facilitates efforts across the College to support students with information and access to funds for co-curricular academic enrichment, experiential learning and professional development.

An internationally recognized expert in modern Russian history, Dean Lindenmeyr is the author or co-editor of several books, including Poverty Is Not A Vice: Charity, Society, and the State in Imperial Russia (Princeton University Press, 1996), the winner of the Heldt Prize for Best Book Published by a Woman in Slavic Studies from the Association for Women in Slavic Studies. Research for her latest book,  (University of Wisconsin Press, 2019), the first biography of one of the most prominent women of late imperial Russia, was supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Philosophical Society, among others. Dean Lindenmeyr is also the co-editor of three volumes in the series Russia鈥檚 Great War and Revolution, 1914-1921 (Slavica Publishers, 2014-2025) devoted to publishing new research on Russian history during World War I and the 1917 Revolution. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Russian language and literature, Dean Lindenmeyr earned her doctorate in History at Princeton University. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of , Philadelphia鈥檚 largest food bank and hunger relief organization.
