EXPLORATORY SCIENCES

Students in the Sciences division of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences start out in either a declared science major or Exploratory Sciences. As an Exploratory Sciences student, you will take courses in areas of interest to help you determine and refine your academic interests. 

You鈥檒l work with a specially trained faculty advisor who will guide you through the process of deciding on a major. In your first year, you will take at least one science and one math course each semester. After a period of course exploration, you will confidently choose a major and perhaps even a minor. Many of the courses you will take prior to declaring a major also .

ABOUT EXPLORATORY SCIENCES

There is no BS degree in Exploratory Sciences. It is merely a temporary major, allowing you time to explore different science majors and determine which interests you the most.

What is the registration process for incoming Exploratory students?

  • Once you decide to attend 麻豆入口, you will complete a course selection survey indicating your interests. The Office of the Registrar in collaboration with your academic advisor will place you in courses based on these preferences and the degree requirements. In your first semester, you will typically take one science and one math course.

Does AP credit count toward my coursework?

  • may not be used to fulfill Core Curriculum requirements. AP credit may be used to fulfill requirements for majors, minors, concentrations, and free elective credits. To be placed in the correct courses, please request that your AP scores are sent to 麻豆入口 directly from the College Board as soon as you receive them.
  • Depending on the subject matter, you should consult with a pre-health advisor as to whether accepting your AP credit will impact your post graduate plans.

Can Exploratory Sciences students take more than one science course?

  • During the first year you will only be guaranteed one science course, but you may be able to take two your second semester.
When will I declare my major?
  • The earliest you may declare a major is after the first semester, contingent upon certain requirements. Science majors must declare a major by the end of the first year.
Can I earn a BS in Exploratory Sciences?
  • Exploratory Sciences is a temporary major allowing you to explore different areas. You cannot earn a BS degree in Exploratory Sciences.
Once I declare, can I switch to another major?
  • After declaring, you may still switch to another science major or add majors or minors, contingent upon space and meeting pre-requisites. Instead, you may also decide to earn a BA by choosing a major in the Arts division. The major requirements will determine the amount of time required to obtain your degree.
  • Students generally only earn one degree (BS or BA) but can choose to complete a major in both divisions. Contact the Office for Undergraduate Students for more information.

There is no specific major required for students interested in pursuing pre-medical, pre-dental, and other pre-health coursework. Pre-health simply reflects your interest in pursuing a career in health care. The Health Professions Advising staff assists all students interested in the health professions.

First-year Exploratory Sciences students interested in pre-health coursework generally take one natural science course their first semester but may be able to register for two the following semester, contingent on availability.
