This sharp increase creates more cost-burdened households鈥攖hose paying more than thirty percent of their wages on housing costs, including rent or mortgage, utilities and insurance.

Yet the affordability crisis isn鈥檛 limited to home costs: In recent years, consumers have also seen a rise in day-to-day expenses like groceries, transportation and utilities. As the strain on U.S. wallets intensifies, how can history guide us toward solutions?
