Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott

Loretta Sweet Jemmott, PhD, RN, FAAN, a highly distinguished international leader in nursing and health equity research, has joined the faculty of the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing (FCN) as the new M. Louise Fitzpatrick Endowed Professor in Community and Home Health Nursing. Established in 2022 by a generous anonymous donor, the professorship is a three-year appointment of a tenured or tenure-track faculty member with specialization in community and home health nursing.

鈥淒r. Jemmott is a renowned educator and scholar whose community engagement and health promotion research has spanned more than four decades,鈥 said Donna S. Havens, PhD, RN, FAAN, Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor, M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing. 鈥淗er passionate focus on improving the health of marginalized communities is the perfect fit for this professorship and the overall mission of FCN.鈥

Dr. Jemmott is one of the nation's foremost researchers in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention, having received more than $150 million in federal funding over the course of her career. As a nurse and behavior scientist, her community-engagement research included partnerships with churches, clinics, barbershops and schools, reaching at-risk communities in real-world settings.

Her work has been published in more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, books and chapters, and has demonstrated not only remarkable success in reducing HIV and STD risk-associated behaviors but also has had a significant impact in reducing the incidence of STDs among diverse populations across the United States and in Botswana, South Africa, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

鈥淢y goal is to help make 麻豆入口 the most community-engaged college of nursing in the nation, promoting health equity and social justice while giving a voice to the voiceless and hope to the hopeless鈥 said Dr. Jemmott.

In 2023, 麻豆入口 Nursing awarded Dr. Jemmott with the M. Louise Fitzpatrick Award for Transformative Leadership for her leadership in nursing and health care, visionary perspective, commitment to excellence, and her service to underserved and vulnerable populations, both nationally and globally.

Among her many awards and accolades, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designated nine of Dr. Jemmott鈥檚 evidence-based HIV/STD and pregnancy prevention curricula for international and national dissemination in 48 states. Across the country, schools, clinics, churches and community-based agency programs incorporate Dr. Jemmott鈥檚 programs into their education and prevention efforts.

In September, at the National Institute of Nursing Research's 40th Anniversary Scientific Symposium鈥攁n event celebrating four decades of transformative nursing science鈥擠r.   Loretta Sweet Jemmott served as an honored keynote presenter.
